5 Stars Easier and smarter than iPod
I highly recommend Zune with Zune Pass. I have a mid sized music collection. (I think I have 7000 MP3s ripped from music I own). If YOU LOVE MUSIC, subscription makes total sense. I can’t think of any reason a music lover should choose an iPod over a Zune – EVEN IF YOU ONLY BUY MUSIC. Read on for my reasons…
I am a 30 something guy who hasn’t been swayed by the masses when it comes to choosing an MP3 player. I use iTunes to buy/rent movies, and was using RhapsodyToGo and a PlaysForSure device for subscription music. My mp3 player was an older model, and small. So I was faced with the decision of upgrading to something new. Frankly I wanted a device like the iPod or Zune that SUPPORTS PlaysForSure because I like the Rhapsody service. (This is my only MAJOR complaint with Apple and Microsoft – and my voice only joins the chorus – Give us a device that will Play ALL MY CONTENT, regardless of where I bought it.) So with that criteria, I had to decide between iTunes/iPod – and Zune/Zune Pass.
First I had to decide which was the better device; regardless of what I wanted to do with it. So I went up to the local Big Box to demo both devices…
**For the first time in recent memory Microsoft has taken Apple to school on the USER INTERFACE.***
The Zune simply blows the iPod out of the water on Ease of use, feel, navigation, etc. I had never touched a Zune, and I *instantly* knew where to find EVERYTHING on it – and could find it, quickly and easily. I picked up the iPod and fumbled around for about 10 seconds, and knew immediately that the Zune was easier. Another KEY feature was the size of the screen, and the size of the text. While I would never recommend it
, tuning to a new song on the road is much easier with a large, easy to navigate interface. Now add the Wireless interface to the mix, and I was quickly sold on which DEVICE was the better machine. (I can walk into my house and sync my ZUNE with my PC over my WIRELESS connection- That rocks.)
Next – I had to decide what I wanted to do with it? Buy Music? Rent Music? Watch Video? If all I wanted to do was watch MOVIES from iTunes on my player, I was in trouble. However, Zune does have the most popular TV shows available.
-Buying music – Well I don’t buy music, but if I did, I can get most everything from the Zune service, and if I have to buy from iTunes, I will find a way to convert it if it doesn’t already come as an MP3. I don’t really buy music anymore anyway, I rent it- so…
Renting – The idea of having to dump Rhapsody really irked me. It’s a great service. But the future of PlaysForSure doesn’t feel solid to me, so…
Zune Pass: This is great software, the social features are great, it doesn’t hog system resources, it has a beautiful interface, and it mirrors the interface on the Zune device. It is much more advanced than iTunes. Library management is a breeze and navigation is effortless. The only minor complaint I have is that managing the “now playing” list could be a improved with click and drag. (This could be me not figuring it out yet -which is the only thing I see that goes counter to the ease of use of everything else associated with this device.)
Zune Pass Content: Okay, no doubt Apple has it all over Microsoft right now on content, if for no other reason than the movie collection. The Music selection on Zune is acceptable though, and if you like PodCasts and popular TV you won’t be disappointed.
In the end, I cannot think of any reason to buy an iPod, other than to say, “Of course I have an iPod.” So if you are looking for a fashion accessory, read another review. (I am not qualified to determine if an iPod is sexier than a Zune. -though I’d say its not.) If you are looking for the best MP3 player – look no farther than the Zune.
***
One final note: There is more to the Zune than I have covered here. Look up info on the Social features, sharing music and discovering new music. Microsoft has really done this thing right. (And make no mistake, I love to bash Microsoft- but in the case, its just not deserved at all.)
5 Stars ZUNE….2 months thinking.lol
I spent 2 months agonizing over IPOD or ZUNE.
my conclusion.
ZUNE. bigger screen, awesome graphics.
if you just like music and wants to be confused over itunes, get an ipod.
if you want to have things easy, and actually watch videos better, get the ZUNE!
its awesome! my first ever mp3 player..im not against apple.
im actually against windows,lol
i have an imac and i put my songs in my zune through vmfusion ware.
ZUNE is worth your money! get it.
3 Stars Average product and not much more
I bought the Zune 120gb to replace my iPod, which had recenty bricked. Since I have gotten the Zune, numerous things about it have bugged me:
1) Often when trying to click straight down on the button you’ll click up or down as well, making you play a band other than the one you wanted.
2) The Zune crashes about 2-5x as much as my iPod did (but takes about 1/5 the time to reboot)
3) The Zune’s battery life is TERRIBLE. It will go from saying I have half a battery to shutting off and not restarting.
4) The Zune’s touch sensitive scrolling is USELESS and more of a hassle than anything (it goes by what direction you’re moving your finger on the wheel, so if you move your finger in a clockwise motion the full 360 of the wheel you’ll end up exactly where you were, because you’re going ‘up’ on the wheel half the time.
5) Zune games are terrible, though texas holdem is fun, iPod’s sudoku beats it.
But even after all this, with all the problems I’ve had with my iPods throughout the years I would still stick with the Zune. My next MP3 player will be a Creative Zen X-Fi hands down.
3 Stars It’s Alright But!
The product itself is alright but the software is typical microsoft crap. When you install zune software it wants to take over all of your media players.
It does not ask you if you have a preference it just takes over everything. The way it organizes things is also annoying. Also if you have i tunes it will try to take over that too. There is a way to sync it with I tunes but is nothing short of a hassle. Id probably buy an ipod if I had to do all over again
4 Stars Almost 5 stars
I bought this Nov 2008 after much research, I was turned off from Ipod anyway I digress.
My reason for buying is for future use in my car and to not have Cd’s & Cases floating around.
I am not gonna cover, basics as every other reviewers will do this. Here I will mention a few issues that may make a difference or help you.
a) Make sure you buy a case/screen guard for it right away, I have a leather case, but it does not allow me to sync without removing it first.
b) You will need additional software to rip DVD’s to it, there are loads of free ones out there and for the tech savvy I guess this is the way to go… I use CuCusofts DVD to Zune software ($30) but it works well.
NOTE: use the output setting of “ZuneMP4″ this works the best on this software converting to Wmv or H.264 just doesnt work well trust me.
c) get an ac/charger for it right away too, its a pain to have to “turn on” your computer, just to charge your Zune
The biggest problem with it, (for me) is that it does NOT (as of writing this with 3.1 software) have a VIDEO playlist feature, this is a nuisance…..so I have loads of music videos + a few movies and you have to scroll through to the one you want, in addition my thought process was to install a 7″ TV screen in my truck and play music videos via a list… of course for now this is not possible.
Its even worse, if like some you have loads of TV shows and want to watch them in order.
with the exception of this, everything has worked flawlessly and I would recommend this to anyone.
